1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3He refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
One of the lectionary readings for this week is the 23rd Psalm. It was written with an intimacy and simplicity that has made it a touchstone for use in funerals, prayers and comfort in times of crisis. For this reason, it might be easy to connect it with fear and death.
But let’s consider it from the perspective of protection and affirmation of life. Here are some of the wonderful truths of this scripture…
Protection is a particularly significant promise. When we’re facing troubles, regardless of whether they are known only to us or particularly public; anxiety-producing, overwhelming or life-altering, we are assured that the Good Shepherd walks with us providing comfort and care. This is God’s promise to those who claim Him as their Shepherd. We need the Shepherd’s wisdom and strength to survive. The only thing that will keep Him from tending us is if we don’t trust Him and refuse to let Him lead and guide us. We only need to put our trust in Him without reservation. The Shepherd does all the rest.
We must remember that God promises us protection, not exemption from troubles. We all have crossed dark valleys in our journey through life but Jesus said,
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Though the path may be difficult at times, He always leads us to green pastures and still waters.
He provides sustenance. It is not His nature to give bitter water in deserts or stones instead of bread. The Good Shepherd always knows what pastures are going to meet the deepest needs of His sheep. Trust Him. If He leads you there, you may rest assured that He knows your need and has provided His very best for you.
Take a few moments to worship by listening to a couple of meditations in song reflecting this theme.
