It seems that there is so much that tempts us to worry, and yet we know that Jesus urges us not to, reminding us that the life of faith is a life of trusting in God. Today in prayer we have the opportunity to honestly acknowledge this and that all of us are “works in progress” in this. And even more than that, as much as we still stumble towards the freedom that trust in God offers, God never gives up on us. God’s faithful accompaniment of us helps us to deepen our trust in Him with each stumbling step we take. Thank you Ryan Petkau for sharing this simple, honest, powerful prayer with us today.
Mind Fixed On Tomorrow
Lord, I confess that my mind is fixed on tomorrow.
I’m told not to worry because, look! You take care of the birds
and the flowers, so surely you’ll take care of me.
But do I really believe that?
Most of the time? Not really.
So I make plans and worry and stress about the worst-case
scenarios and what-ifs –
imagining that I actually have control.
But right now, I pause and look back at the times
I felt you there with me,
and realize you were with me even when I didn’t feel you.
So I take a deep breath, and I trust you a little bit more
that I did yesterday.
Amen.
